Water first, and then everything else
A Kenyan organisation led by engineers and community elders.
Started by a water engineer
Maji Safi began in 2014 when a Nairobi water engineer returned to her home county, Turkana, and found women still walking six hours for a jerrycan of water. She drilled a borehole with her own savings and a village committee she trained to look after it.
Today the work spans three counties. The idea is the same: build water points with the community, train the people who will run them, and measure that they keep working.
Our values
Community ownership
Elders and committees choose the site and run the water point.
Measured results
Sensors and field visits prove every point is working.
Radical openness
Published accounts, results and mistakes.
Built to last
Solar power, local spare parts and trained mechanics.
Who leads the work

A former head teacher who runs the school water programme.

Works with elders and committees on every new water point.
