From a Borrowed Veranda in Mathare to 4,800 Independent Livelihoods
In 2017, five mothers sat on a borrowed concrete veranda in Mathare 4A. Each placed KSh 200 into an old biscuit tin so one mother could purchase bulk Kitenge fabrics from the central railway wholesale market.
When she repaid it with modest surplus three weeks later, the tin funded the next mother. Soon, their biggest obstacle was not business acumen—it was leaving infant children alone or with untrained neighbors while they traded.
Mama Jamii Foundation grew out of this basic truth: when mothers are guaranteed safe, community-run childcare and clean micro-capital, household poverty in informal settlements doesn’t just decline—it breaks.
