A daughter of Mathare and her neighbours
Mama Jamii was founded by Mama Beatrice Onyango, who started with a single daycare room in 2016.
It started with one room and twelve children
Mama Beatrice Onyango watched neighbours turn down work because there was nobody to mind their children. In 2016 she opened one room in Mathare 4A, with twelve toddlers and two helpers.
Within a year the mothers had asked for more: a little capital, and a skill that earned more than hawking. Mama Jamii grew to meet those requests, one programme at a time, and it is still led by the women it serves.
